One year of nights

A year ago I opened an empty project after my QA shift. Twelve hundred hours later, Nine Rivers has a name, a battle system and a Steam page on the way.

A year ago tonight I came home from my shift testing other people's games, opened an empty project, and made a grey square walk across a grey bridge. I have done some version of that most nights since: nine to one, five nights a week, with tea.

By my log that is about twelve hundred hours. It is also a town, a temple, an inn, four rivers' worth of story, a battle system I have rebuilt three times and a title I finally like.

What is next

This autumn: the demo, the Steam page and the first press. Next year: Early Access with the first four rivers. After that, the other five, at the speed nights allow.

Thank you to everyone who has played a build, sent a bug, or just told me this is a game they want. Since I was a kid I wanted to play the wuxia game nobody made. It is strange and wonderful to be the one making it.

The Steam page opens with the demo.

Chen is finishing the Steam Next Fest demo. Leave your email and you’ll get one message, the day you can wishlist.

A Molby example — Nine Rivers is a fictional game, so there is no store page yet.
